In 2019, we asked a group of our youth a question: “What things bother you about Uganda?” They were very quick to list several issues they had including the condition of the roads, the high rate of youth not being educated and the dirty state of their communities. Each of them expected someone else to fix these problems around them. We challenged to be the change they wanted to see in their nation.
From that conversation, Petros Zoe “Charity Clubs” were born. These were youth-led clubs that addressed different issues in communities such as waste management, water sanitation, plumbing and other hygiene issues. In partnerships with the local government and health department, these charity clubs began visiting homes in their communities to asses the health and safety of each residence. When problems needed to be addressed, they gave the homeowner or landlord a deadline to fix each issue. If they refused to comply, the property would be reprimanded.
For the elderly and physically handicapped community, the youth would gather and help fix the problem for them. These charity clubs began catching the attention of leaders in each community, and they were eventually asked to present their findings on the floor of the local parliament meeting!
The charity clubs have now developed into “youth clubs” which have the same vision for community transformation, with a new business focus. We have clubs that are focused on waste management and hygiene, early childhood development and urban farming. Each club sets out to start a business that will help their club become self sustained.
